DO YOU REALLY NEED FOLLOWERS AND LIKES?

By ignoring Instagram, I am creating photos to please myself, instead of my audience.

Do we really need to obsess over likes and followers on social media? I mean, do they really measure the value of our photography? Or are we just after fame, money, and influence?

I get it, we love that instant feedback and affirmation we get from likes and follows, but let's be honest - it's all a bit silly, isn't it?

It's like money – we always want more and more. But will having a gazillion followers or loads of likes really bring us happiness? Wouldn't we find more joy in sharing our photos with a few close friends and seeing the impact it has on them?

Let's focus on the real meaning of our work and the connections we make with people through our photography, rather than obsessing over the numbers on social media.

Title: Disregard the Likes and Followers: Setting Your Own Rules for Photography and Life

In today's digital age, the influence of social media cannot be underestimated. It has transformed the way we share and consume photography, creating an intense focus on likes, followers, and the pursuit of social validation. As photographers, it's easy to get caught up in this game, allowing these metrics to define the value and success of our work. But what if there's a different way to approach social media and photography?

The truth is, the only way to truly win the game of social media is to refuse to play by the rules set by others and to set your own rules for your own game of photography and life.

Instead of chasing likes and followers, consider reframing your approach. Focus on creating and sharing authentic and meaningful content that reflects your personal vision and values. Let your work speak for itself, rather than allowing numerical metrics to dictate its worth.

It’s time to shift the focus away from external validation and redefine success on your own terms. Embrace the art of storytelling through your photography, using your images to express your unique perspective and connect with others on a deeper level.

Challenge yourself to set your own standards for what constitutes a successful photograph. Whether it’s capturing a fleeting moment of raw emotion, showcasing the beauty of the natural world, or shedding light on important social issues, let your passion and creativity guide your artistic process.

In the same vein, take control of how you engage with social media. Rather than getting swept up in the endless scroll and comparison game, use these platforms as a means to connect with like-minded individuals, seek inspiration, and share your work with a genuine audience.

As you navigate the world of social media, remember that numbers don’t define your worth as a photographer or as an individual. Set goals that align with your personal growth and artistic development. Strive for meaningful connections, thought-provoking conversations, and impactful storytelling rather than a high follower count or a certain number of likes.

Ultimately, the key to finding fulfilment in photography and in life lies in setting your own rules and staying true to your vision. Embrace your uniqueness, stay committed to your creative journey, and strive to make a genuine impact through your work. When you refuse to play by the rules of social media and prioritise authenticity over popularity, you've already won the game.
